In 2021, Don’t Bank on the Bomb Scotland, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and 40 other organisations co-signed a letter calling on Scotland’s largest bank, NatWest Group, to divest from the nuclear weapons industry. So far the bank has declined to change its investment policy and continues to finance nuclear weapons producers to the tune of £2 billion.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and threat to use nuclear weapons should be a wake-up call. The detonation of just one nuclear weapon would have devastating humanitarian and environmental consequences. A nuclear exchange using a small fraction of the arsenals held by Russia and NATO states would be catastrophic, bringing about climate disruption and famine.
Our banks and pension funds must stop funding the nuclear arms race as a matter of urgency.
Don’t Bank on the Bomb Scotland and ICAN have called a UK-wide day of action focusing on NatWest Group on Friday 8 April 2022.
We’re organising actions in Edinburgh and Glasgow (see below). If you live in another part of the country you can hold a demonstration outside your local branch of NatWest or RBS or simply hand in a letter to your local branch manager, which we will provide.
NatWest is due to review its investment policy over the summer so the more people that take part in this action, the greater the pressure will be on the bank to change its investment policy. Please sign up to get involved!
